Tax Identification Number (TIN) registration in Sri Lanka
Things to know prior to opening a TIN
A Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is a nine-digit number issued by Inland Revenue Department (IRD) in Sri Lanka. It is used to keep track of its taxpayers and optimize the process of tax compliance. The TIN number is essential for paying taxes, importing and exporting or obtaining services from Inland Revenue. After obtaining TIN, it is required to apply for the relevant Tax type registration and any other required services based on the requirements and the liabilities.
TIN registration can be done in two methods.
1. Use the E Services of the Inland Revenue Department. IRD E Service to Register for TIN
2. Visit the primary registration unit of the IRD Head office or any nearest regional office.

The Procedures to be followed to register for TIN
This article explains the process to follow when registering for the purpose of Tax Identification Number (TIN) using the IRD E Service portal.
Collect the required supporting documents
Required supporting documents are depend on the type of party who are going to register with TIN.
For individuals
- If Sri Lankan National – National Identity Card (NIC) / Valid driving license/ Senior Citizens Identity cards
- If Foreign National – Valid Passport
- If a sole proprietorship is to be added – Business registration certification
- If the Current address is different with the NIC
- For Sri Lankan National – Utility Bill, Landline Telephone Bill, Statement of Bank Account or Passbook, Grama Niladhari Certificate.
- For Foreign National – A Proof of Local Address
For Partnership Businesses
- Partnership registration certificate
- All Partners who are Sri Lankan Nationals – National Identity cards / Valid Driving Licenses
- All partners who are Foreign Nationals – Valid Passports
For Registered Companies
- Certificate of Incorporation (Form 2A, 2D, 41, 42 etc.)
- Application for registration of a Company certified by Registrar of Companies (ROC) – Form 1, Form 5, From 40 etc.)
- All Directors who are Sri Lankan Nationals – National Identity cards or Valid Driving Licenses
- All Directors who are Foreign Nationals – Valid Passport
- All notices of change Directors / Secretary certified by Registrar of Companies (ROC)- All Form 20 etc.)
- Notice of Change of Address Certified by Registrar of Companies (ROC) – Form 13/35 etc.)
- Form 18 certified by the Registrar of companies, if form 20 is obtained to recognize the director’s signature.
- Articles of Association.
- The registration certificate issued by the Board of Investment and the relevant agreement.
For Others
- Letter of request by the head of the institution
- Minutes of AGM / Executive Report (if applicable)
- Registration certificate
- For branches – Confirmation of the branch issued by the head office
- For Government & semi-Government institutions – Act / Gazette for the establishment
- For joint ventures – Joint venture agreement and copies of TIN certificates of the partners
- For joint ventures and foreign companies (if applicable) – Power of attorney for the signatory
- For projects – Project agreement and cabinet approval etc.
- For trusts – Trust deed and NIC (Sri Lankans) or valid passport (Foreign Nationals) of the Trustees
Access the E Service and Update required information
- TIN number application procedure
- For individuals, you should choose “INDIVIDUAL LOCAL” as registration type.
- For businesses, you should choose “REGISTRED COMPANY” as registration type.
- Fill the application and remember to fill red started spaces correctly.
- After that go to the bottom of the web page and see the image on left.
- Then select your purpose of registration and give next.
- After that, more personal news related to you fields that need to be filled are indicated by red asterisks fill in the information accordingly and complete your process.
- After you have sent the messages, they have been received successfully you will be informed by an ACKNOWLEDGMENT.
- You should save it.
- End of this procedure you will be receive your TIN through an email.
- Later it is provided to your address by the postal service.
